Local Keyword Research for Small Service Businesses
How a small service business can pick local keywords: the job people search, the place you actually cover, and the page that should rank.
SEO
Local keyword research is a list of jobs people already search, plus the places you really serve. A small service business should not collect hundreds of phrases. It should choose the ones a page can honestly answer.
Start from the job, then add the place
Write the service in the words a customer uses, then add the town or borough only where you work. “Boiler repair Hackney” belongs on a page if you repair boilers in Hackney. It does not belong in a footer of every page. Google’s SEO Starter Guide is clear that pages should match the reason for the search.
Group the phrases into service pages first. Articles come after. That order is explained in service pages versus blog posts.
Check intent before you write
Search the phrase yourself. If the results are quotes, maps, and local firms, the page needs a price range or a way to enquire. If the results are guides, write an article and link it to SEO. Ignore phrases you cannot fulfil. They bring the wrong call.
Turn the list into pages
Give each money phrase one page, then support it with content and a maintained Google Business Profile. The 90-day version is in a 90-day SEO plan. For London, start from the London area pages that match where you work, or talk to Ayrahs if you want the research done with the site.
